November Night Sketching

The nights are starting to get chilly, and what better way to embrace the cool November breeze than having an evening sketchwalk in a park?

This month, Urban Sketchers Philippines will do some relaxing night sketching at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati City. We will start the session at 5pm sharp with a short meeting and a lecture on techniques.

MEETING PLACE: Caramia Gelateria, beside Amici
TIME: 5PM

Please be there by 5pm so that we can begin the meeting-lecture right away while there's still some natural light. :)

***The works that will be produced on November 22 may be chosen as part of the Urban Sketchers Philippines exhibit in January.***

Let's catch (and sketch) the Lights and Sound show too! The show happens every 30 minutes starting 6pm.

We'll regroup at 8pm for show & tell, then have dinner together so we can discuss our plans for the next three months in detail.

THINGS TO BRING:

  • Loose leaf acid-free drawing paper/board, maximum size 8.5"x11" (short bond size). Spring-bound sketchbooks are also okay, because the sheets can be torn off.
  • Your choice of materials, but keep in mind we will be sketching at night, so lots of lights and shadows. :)
  • A small flashlight/headlamp/LED light with a clip that can be attached to your sketchbook/pad/drawing board and allow you to see what you're doing.
  • Foldable seat/ a piece from an old tarp /something you can sit on.
  • Water and food to munch on while you're sketching (we'll be having dinner late).

We have a lot in store for Urban Sketchers in Philippines in the coming months, so we hope you can attend our November sketchwalk and dinner meeting!

Our agenda for the meeting:

  • December Sketchwalk
  • Urban Sketchers Philippines exhibit preparations (November to December)
  • New Year Party / Exhibit opening (January)
  • January Sketchwalk & Sketching Basics Workshop
  • January (ad hoc) sketchwalk: Papal Visit

See you on November 22! Click on our event page to join: November Night Sketching. Come and sketch with us--it's free, and you don't have to be an art major!

Fountain Pen Day 2014

Fountain Pen Day was celebrated in the Philippines from November 6-8 at SM Aura Premiere in Taguig City. The Urban Sketchers teamed up with Fountain Pen Network for this event, which featured an exhibit of works done using fountain pens, pen and ink sales, workshops, calligraphy demos, drawing contests, a pen meet, and a sketch meet.

It's a Sketchy Night!, by Rene Enriquez

Urban Sketchers Philippines member Rene Enriquez shares with us this video, in which he sketches one of the patrons in the restaurant he was having dinner in. He took a video while he sketched and added watercolor washes when he got home.

"Over dinner tonight, I sketched this white haired old man who was engrossed with reading something on his laptop. It was cool actually to see he wasn't afraid with new technology and was keeping up with the times. For the whole duration of this 12-minute sketch, I painstakingly took a video with my phone cam using my left hand while my right was of course, drawing."

Let's celebrate Fountain Pen Day!

Fountain Pen Day is held every first Friday in November to promote the use of this well-loved fine writing instrument. Started by Cary Yeager several years ago in the US, Fountain Pen Day will be observed in different countries around the world this weekend. This is the first time to celebrate it in the Philippines!

An art exhibition by Fountain Pen Enthusiasts shall be displayed from Nov. 6 to 8. This features works by members of Fountain Pen Network-Philippines and Urban Sketchers Philippines and is situated at the ground floor of SM Aura Premiere between Starbucks and Uniqlo. Along with the Art Exhibition, fantastic discounts await pen buyers on site.

With the participation of Fountain Pen Network-Philippines, and our sponsors: Lamy, Parker, Scribe, and Sheaffer, visitors also will have the chance to win exciting prizes via online contests, weekend raffle draws, and have fun at the Sketch and Pen Meet Up on Saturday, Nov. 8 starting from 1:00 pm onwards.

Here are some sketches made by Urban Sketchers-Philippines members using fountain pens.

After October's sunset sketchwalk, Carlo Martinez headed to a resto-bar and sketched his beer bottle using a Baoer fountain pen and a waterbrush.

Janeil Arlegui's first time to use fountain pens for sketching was done using Lamy fountain pens and permanent Sailor ink so he could add watercolors.

Lauren Villarama used Waterman blue-black ink in her Rotring Esprit to do this sketch.

Man Marbella did this sketch during the Escolta sketchwalk.

Manuel Jiongco used a Sailor Fude in his Harbour Square sketches.

The Urban Sketchers will be participating in the celebration of Fountain Pen Day! We'll be having a sketch session on November 8, 1pm onwards at SM Aura. Come and sketch with us!

Sunset Sketching at the Harbor

Our official sketchwalk for the month of October was held on the 18th at Harbour Square by Manila Bay. For a change, we scheduled the sketchwalk in the afternoon, hoping to catch the famed Manila Bay sunset. Unfortunately, it was a bit cloudy that day, but that didn't dampen our spirits, and we sketched away!

It was the Urban Sketchers' second time to sketch as a group at Harbour Square; the first time was in January 2012, when USk-PH was only a few months old. That time, ten sketchers attended the event; this time, we had 30 members sketching the scenes at the harbor. We welcomed a lot of new members, many of which we met during the Art Mart in September.

Janeil was able to be at the venue early, thanks to postponed graduate school classes, and lost no time trying out his new Lamy fountain pens.

The urban sketchers found their own spots around the area--some sketching by the coffee shop at Harbour Square, some seated at the very edge of the bay.

Happy faces!

Here are some of the sketches we made that day.

Everyone's! We gave everyone stickers that they can put on their notebooks, sketchpads, and pencil cases.

It was a great turnout, and we're all looking forward to the next sketchwalk!
